About the Dish

Umm Ali is a Mughlai delicacy that consists of 3 elements, bread, rabdi, and dry fruits. Also known as Omali or Om Ali, it’s an exotic delicacy that’s rare in India. The term Umm Ali means “Ali’s mother” and while this dessert hails from Egypt, it’s also their national dish. According to folklore, the dish dates back to the Ayyubid era. The queen of Egypt, in the 13th century, wanted a dish named after her and asked her chefs to make a dish worthy of her name. Hence, the dish Om Ali was born. With a rich history like this, the dish uses simple ingredients but is a must-try delicacy.

How to Eat

Enjoy this drool-worthy dish with only one type of accompaniment- your family or friends. It has crusty bread on the bottom, topped with cold rabdi and some chopped nuts. Since it’s supposed to be enjoyed cold, you can even store it in the fridge for the day. It's a sweet treat that can be enjoyed as a dessert or as a midnight snack all by yourself.
