I was brought up in a traditional Gujarati family in Ahmedabad. I learnt cooking from my mother as a teenager. She was very keen on teaching me all her recipes. Even though she mostly eye-balled the spices in her recipes, her food always turned out delicious- a little sweet, but not sugary; a little spicy, but not overwhelming. I don’t know if I was interested in the kitchen then, I just wanted to cook because she did. Later on, while studying home science is when I realized that I had the talent and passion for cooking. I started watching cookery TV shows more often. I clipped recipes from the newspaper too and experimented with them. Whenever I prepared anything new, I would invite our neighbors over for a ‘taste test’ and very rarely did they return disappointed. That encouraged me quite a bit! Just like my mother I also never cooked by proportions, always eye-balled my way through the recipe. Everybody in my family now loves my food. Husband and children are always up with special requests and I love fulfilling them. Being a part of Nativ Chefs has been a wholesome experience and made me self-reliant.
